Day 38 - Goodbye Vica, Hello Venice

16 August, 2011

(Big news from last night is that Daniel lost his "other" front tooth - He lost the first one in Salzburg) Anyway, awoke early this morning and had breakfast before starting to pack the car.  As we were packing we had a visit from Roszi's other grand-daughter (and Eva's daugher) Evelyn.  After a quick hello and goodbye, we finished packing the car and prepared to leave.  We said goodbye to Roszi and Toni, and Edina also came out to say goodbye to us, and with that we were off.
We had a long drive ahead of us, one of the longest of our holiday.  600km to Venice, and with stops every couple of hours this would take the best part of 7 hours.  The roads were reasonably free of traffic (by european standards!) and we had a reasonably smooth run, apart from a rain storm as we were crossing into Italy.  The sky was black, and we even had thunder, but luckily it only lasted about an hour.  By the time we got to Venice the sky was blue and it was 30 degrees.

We parked our car in a large carpark at the start of the island and took a water taxi to our accommodation, the Palazzo Guardi. - At one stage Venice was the richest city in Europe, and what remains of the wealth can still be seen, as nearly every second building is a "palace" of some description.  Our accommodation is charming, and is overlooking a canal.  As we were settling into our room a couple of Gondolas paddled past our window.  The first thing we did was to change into shorts (for the first time this trip!) and then we wandered off through the streets and alleys to find something to eat.  We eventually wandered as far as Piazza San Marco.  After much debate, we decided on Pizza for Josh and Daniel and Pasta for Paul and Mazz.  We are in Italy after all!
