Day 33 - Budapest Day 2
15 August, 2011
After a good night sleep in the Hilton we headed down for breakfast. There was a good selection of cereals, Juices, cold meats, pastries as well as eggs, bacon and sausages. Feeling energised by a good feed we headed off across the river to join a walking tour of Budapest.
The walking tour went for 2 1/2 hours and covered about 2 miles. The tour was very informative, and as well as seeing the significant landmarks of Budapest we also learnt all about the history of Hungary - The initial settling of the land, The first King, St Steven, St Matthias, The Hapsburgs, The Austro Hungarian Empire and WWI, WW2 and the Soviet Occupation. The tour finished with lunch in a small cantina, which was located across the road from the Hilton, hidden away in an unmarked building. Lunch was more gulyas, and beef percolt, which was a lot tastier and much cheaper than last nights meal.
After lunch, Mazz and Daniel spent some time in our room at the Hilton just relaxing Paul and Josh headed back into Budapest to check out the great market hall. The market was very similar to the central market back in Adelaide, and about the same size as well, but with a distinctively Hungarian flavour. There were lots of stall selling fresh produce, including fruit and veg, as well as lots of paprika and small goods. (Especially Kolbasz - Paprika Sausage)
In the evening we all headed back into Budapest. Dinner was a Garlic Langos (Fried bread dough), and then we had a sunset cruise along the Danube. It was especially beautiful to see the lights of all the buildings and bridges come on.
