Not such a nice day outside today, but this is Germany! With an early start and early breakfast (thanks to our host for having breakfast before the proper time), we headed back to Schwangau to see the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. This is the castle that Walt Disney used as an inspiration for the Disney castle. The castle was never completed not just because King Ludwig the Second ran out of money but because he died before it was finished. The day before he died, he was declared to be insane and then mysteriously drowned in a river along with his psychiatrist....hhhhhmmm a mystery! The walk up to the castle apparently takes 55minutes but we did it in about half an hour. I'm afraid Trudie you will have to take the bus up then walk down to the castle for 15 minutes and then take the horse and cart down the rest of the way. We have already checked it all out for you. You cant go into the castle without a guide and you are not allowed to take photos. The castle was only a third finished and it took 17 years to get that far. All building was stopped when Ludwig died and within 6 weeks it was already open as a museum. It is very spectacular inside, with many murals, chandeliers like crowns and intricate wood carvings (the top of his 4 posted bed canopy has different spires carved from wood from his favourite churches- 4 wood craftsmen that took 3 years). If you ever come to Germany , its a must to see!
Once back down the bottom of the mountain, we stopped for lunch and had one of our other favourite Austrian desserts- Kaiserschmaren (chopped-up raisin pancakes with apple sauce)....yum! We did a little shopping and then drove back to Garmisch- Partenkirchen- such a beautiful drive. One can never get sick of seeing the view of Alps towering majestically all around you.
Garmisch and Partenkirchen actually use to be seperate towns for many centuries, and they still maintain separate identities. In 1935 the two towns were forced to combine by Adolf Hitler in anticipation of the 1936 winter Olympic games. We parked our car at the Olympic Stadium and took a few photos of the ski jumps, which are still used for a competition on New Year's day.
After a half an hour walk, we paid for our tickets to enter the Partnach Gorge (Partnachklamm), where the Partnach river surges spectacularly through a narrow gap between the high limestone cliffs. As you walk along the narrow path, and sometimes through the side of the cliff, there is a constant drip from the cliff. We all got a little wet, but that is the fun part. Because we had already walked so far today, Paul spoilt us and let us go back to the car by horse and cart. Such a beautiful way to end such a fantastic day!
