Day 9 - Sunday in London

17 July, 2011

Well it's Sunday in London, so we decided to head to church this morning. - It might be the only chance we get on our Holiday.  So where do you go to church when you are in London - Well where else but Hillsong London.  Hillsong London is located in the Dominion Theatre in the West End.  - The Theatre is shared with the Queen Musical "We will Rock You" Musical from Monday to Saturday with Church held there on Sunday.  We arrived early as we did not know where we were going, but were met with a warm welcome.  We sat down inside, and who should sit behind us, but a couple who we knew (Kate and Rory) who had moved to London from Adelaide 8 years ago.  The service was good (especially the music), and we made plans to catch up with Kate and Rory later in the day for dinner.

Braving the Rain
Drying out in the Underground afterwards

We stepped out of church and headed for the Lyceum Theater where the Lion King is playing.  The show is sold out all week, but we have heard that sometimes if you inquire at the theatre box office you might get lucky. And we were lucky. - We managed to secure the only 4 remaining seats for Tuesday Night. - The boys are very excited and can't wait for Tuesday to come.  We stepped out of the theater, and it started raining again.  Undeterred, we headed off to see some of the sights of London.  First stop, Picadilly circus, and the statue of Eros (actually the status of his twin brother Anteros).  The statue is officially called "The Angel of Christian Charity" and was erected in 1893 to commemorate the philanthropic works of Lord Shaftsbury.

After Piccadilly circus, it was onto Trafalgar Square, and the Nelsons column.  The statue commemorates Nelson's victory over Napoleon in 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar.  The statue was completed in 1844. Before we left the subway we purchased two umbrellas, but when we stepped out of the subway system it had stopped raining! We were surprised to see there were no pigeons there - Apparently in 2007 feeding of the birds was banned due to health concerns.

Not worried at all!

After Trafalgar square, we decided to head down the road past No.10 Downing street to Westminster Abbey and Big Ben. Then the rain started again.  Our newly purchased umbrellas lasted all of about 3 minutes before getting turned inside out by the wind and the cover splitting. - I guess that's the problem when you by the cheapest umbrella you can. We continued down the road clutching what remained of our umbrellas and stumbled upon the horse guards. A soon as we taken a photo (with a very nervous Joshua and Daniel) the horses were off for a "Changing of the Horse Guards Ceremony".  After changing of Horse Guards ceremony, we decided to admit defeat.  It was still raining and we were all wet, so it was back to the Hotel to dry out and get ready for Dinner.  Hopefully tomorrow will be a better (and perhaps dryer!) day.
