Day 10- Buckingham Palace and Imperal War Museum

18 July, 2011

This morning we had a bit of a relaxing start to the morning as Paul went and did the washing and we relaxed until it was time to head to the Buckingham Palace for the changing of the guards. We had read in a travel book for the best spot to see this Royal Ceremony and it was a good spot indeed. We saw the The Life Guards, 1st Battalion Irish Guards, Band of the Scots Guards, and the 1st Battalion Irish Guards Corps of Drums. There were heaps of people all enjoying the ceremony. The police officers on horse back would walk past us and warn us of pick pockets in 3 different languages. Very impressive!

After this we made our way to Starbucks for a hot chocolate and and a muffin. The English Summer is not much warmer than our winter.....lots of rain too. So much for thawing out!!!

Then on to the Imperial War Museum. As soon as we walked in the door we were very impressed, not because it was free but because it had a great collection of planes, tanks, subs and artillary from World War 1 and 2. The boys were very snap happy with their cameras. I decided to let the boys do their own thing and I went up stairs to see the area dedicated to the Holocaust. This was not appropriate for children under 14 years. It was a good call to not take the boys as it was very visual. It was the best presentation I have ever seen. The Holocaust Exhibition uses historical material to tell the story of the Nazis' persecution of the Jews and other groups before and during the Second World War. I certianly came out feeling deeply emotional. This crime against humanity was just so brutal. I finally met up with the boys who wanted to do some shopping in the gift shop.

Raining again, we made our way to the underground to Harrods. We didn't buy anything, but my twin sister has decided to get us to do our own Amazing Race in famous places. So our task was to try on some designer underware or try on 2 unusual hats. We went for the latter as we wouldn't have been able to try underware on. We actually weren't allowed to even take photos in there, but we got away with it! Well done Daniel!!

While we were over this side of town we found a Dutch pancake resteraunt for dinner. The waitress misheard us. We ordered one chili con carne pancake and 3 banana, nut and chocolate sauce pancakes. We only got the chili con carne one and only one sweet one. So glad she got it wrong cause the pancakes were huge! And I mean huge. We split the sweet one up between the four of us and Paul and I (with a little help from Josh) ate the savoury one. They were awesome.

As we were walking through the town Chelsea (Josh wasn't impressed cause he prefers Tottenham), we came across this shops. Have a good laugh!!!!

Hi, You all doing very well, keep it up. Your English summer weather might be like an australian winter but not Inglewood, the average here is max. 11, min. zero. Think I prefer what you have even if it is a bit wet. Love all your photos. Love Dad

Looks like you are having a great time in London. Pity there were no pigeons in the square, even if they are a health risk. the guards certainly are more colorful than when we saw them in the winter. the war museum would have been very interesting. Keep on blogging it's good to see what you're up to each day and we enjoy seeing your photos. Hope the boys are enjoying themselves ( they look as though they are ).
Love to all
